Should I Eat 2200 Calories To Lose Weight?

I do 40 mintues on the elliptical 3 times a week and the calorie calculators online say that i should eat 2200 calories to burn 1 lb week. I am 20 years old, 5′4, and 222 lbs. Doesnt 2200 seem like a lot. Right now ive been eating about 1300 calories a day and the weight loss has been very slow. Will upping the calories to that much help me or hurt me?

2000 is the average alloted caloric intake of an average person. i’d recommend you stick with the 2000 calories just make healthier choices. be sure to excerise at least 3 times a week for thirty minutes a day. it will increase your weight loss. Also I’m sure its okay to go a little over or a little under as far as 100 or 200 calories. I wish you the best. You can do it! =)

You need to be realistic about weight loss or you will soon find yourself in trouble. It takes time to lose weight safely. If you lose more quickly, you will end up with a lot of loose, flabby skin all over, as well as jeopardizing any health benefits of weight loss, by stressing your other organs. You are currently not getting enough calories, and calorie calculators are there to help you lose weight safely, so please don’t dismiss them.
It is good that you are exercising. Walking and swimming are also good ways to burn calories on the days that you are not doing the elliptical, if you have time to do more. Best of luck to you.

You should only eat when you’re hungry. If you are trying to lose weight, don’t hurt yourself trying to eat more than you really want to.
On the other hand, eating too few calories will prevent you from losing weight. Your body will go into starvation mode, and then when you go back to normal eating you can gain weight really fast.
There is also more to it than just calories. An apple is different than a cookie. Check out Weight Watchers – their “points” system evaluates the fat and carbohydrates of foods instead of just the calories. My boyfriend has been doing it and he’s lost 75 pounds so far.
    Good luck!

Well I’m 20, 5′5″ and weight 157 and I think I look normal, I love my weight, I would just like to tone a little. A lot of women that are 20 and around our height think the normal weight is 121 which is bull ****! Try eating 1600 calories a day, my little brother is morbid obese and he lost 65lbs in 6weeks by eating 1600 calories and walking for 30 mins a day. So if he can do it anyone can, your not that far from normal (whatever that is suppose to mean). Trust me you’ll get there soon, but stay away from soda and sugar! Good Luck!

Yes, you are not consuming enough calories, 1300 calories is very low and you cut it too fast. When you don’t consume enough calories, your body retains fat harder and lowers your metabolism.
Go to 2200 calories and have your body fat percentage measured, which is more accurate then measuring your weight. Then once you hit a plataue decrease it gradually every week.
